A “wily old” stag has learnt the best way to thieve chook nuts from gardens – the usage of its antlers.
The mature pink deer stag used to be filmed raiding a suburban lawn at the fringe of Exmoor, Somerset by means of biologist Dr Jochen Langbein.
Mr Langbein, who has adopted the deer for 2 years, stated: “It’s discovered to very intentionally use the end of his antlers to dislodge chook feeders so as to get on the contents.
“At the instant it is only him, the others have not stuck on but.”
‘Nightly lawn guests’
The 12 to 15-year-old stag used to be stuck on digicam by means of Mr Langbein in the beginning of the 12 months.
“He used to be a in particular wily outdated stag,” he stated.
“I noticed him raiding any other chook feeder two years in the past, however he used to be no longer slightly as adept then.”
Standing at as much as 140cm (four.5ft) tall and weighing round 200kg (440lbs), pink deer are Britain’s greatest land mammal.
But with poaching “on the upward push'” on Exmoor, Mr Langbein stated stag are returning night time after night time to their “favorite lawn haunts” where they “really feel protected”.
He added: “There are a host that trip from the center of Exmoor right down to folks’s gardens.
“However, many people remain blissfully unaware of their nightly garden visitors.”
